Driver Education
Driver Education Student/Guardian:
We're excited to have you participating in Driver Education this year at West Jordan High School! Because Driver Education requirements are set by the state, we hope this information (listed alphabetically) will help your student complete everything in a timely manner.
Helpful Links:
Attendance: Attendance is paramount to successful completion of Driver Education. The state requires that each student have at least 27 hours of in class seat time. Thus, there are only 2 absences (excused or unexcused) allowed by the state before a student will be required to retake the course. If you are planning a vacation or if your student has previously struggled with attendance, please consider the most appropriate quarter for Driver Education. Students who exceed those absences could be dropped from the course or assigned a different course at WJHS.
Birthday: As per state requirements students are allowed to participate in Driver Education 3 months before their birthday and must be eligible for a permit. It is recommended to take Driver Education the quarter before your students birthday or the quarter your student turns 16.
Class: Students must complete the Driver Education class with an 80% grade or higher, to pass per state requirement.
Payments: $140 Driver Education Fee is payable in the Main Office. Receipt of payment is required prior to students access to ranges and road drives. Thus, they need to be paid by the end of the first week of the quarter.
Permit: A Learner Permit must be obtained at the Driver License Division (DLD) before the quarter of enrollment begins. Once a student obtains their Learner Permit, parents are responsible to begin driving a minimum of 40 hours with their student, per the state requirement. We encourage you to please start driving with your child as soon as they get their permit. Please remember that the permit only allows them to drive with a parent, legal guardian or driving instructor. It is not a license and does not allow them to drive alone. If we are aware that they drive themselves to ranges or road drives, their range or road drive will be canceled for that day.
Students who do not have their permit by the first day of class will be removed from class.
Ranges: Students will sign up for their 3 ranges in person during their Driver Ed class. Students are required to observe a range for 45 minutes prior to their first range. Students must complete all 3 required ranges before they are eligible to do road drives. Please be sure to spend some time driving with your child before their first range. If they are still too scared or uncomfortable to drive and do not want to do a range during their assigned quarter, then please sign them up for a later quarter.
Roads: After completion of 3 required range sessions, students will be placed in a queue (based on their Driver License eligibility date) to complete their road drives. Eligibility date is figured by the latest date of the following three dates: 1 - 16th birthday, 2 - last day of the class and 3 - 6 months after issue date of permit. About a month prior* to their eligibility date, students will be contacted by their road instructor to schedule their 4 road drives.
*Contingent on staffing and students’ readiness to drive.
Zero Fatalities: Before the end of the quarter of enrollment, students/guardians must attend a Zero Fatalities night. WJHS hosts a Zero Fatalities Parent Night each quarter, it will be announced in class but you will also have opportunities at other schools/online. Students must attend with a parent, per state requirement. Non-attendance will result in students failing the Driver Education class.
Thank you for your efforts to support your student in Driver Education. Once the quarter begins, you will be provided a disclosure with information for your specific quarter of enrollment. Please remain in contact with your Driver Education teacher during the quarter of enrollment.
